Sam's Three!

We celebrated Sam's birthday starting on Friday.  We took him to the Hill Airforce Base airplane museum.  He loved it as well as the rest of the family.  And it was FREE!

The kids especially liked the planes with faces and teeth.

Sam's favorite was the big helicopters.

They even had a kid museum part that had a small flight simulator that the kids could play with.

On Saturday, I spent 2-3 hours decorating Sam's birthday cake (about 4-5 hours from baking to clean-up).  We made a bug birthday cake this year complete with a bee, a grasshopper, and an ant.  After spending so much time on the cake, I thought, "Maybe I shouldn't spend so much time making birthday cakes."  Then today after his birthday I asked him what his favorite part of his birthday was and he said, "the bugs on my cake".  It then made it all worth it and I thought, "I guess I can spend a few hours making a cake if that's what he'll remember most about his birthday."

Grandma and Grandpa Anderson and Kristen came over to celebrate on Sunday evening.  We had pulled pork sandwiches and cheetos.  Sam had a lot of help opening his presents and was really good to let Mabel and Max help him open them.  However, he had a harder time letting them play with his new toys.

I think his favorite present was the planes and helicopters.

Doesn't that smile make 3 hours worth of decorating all worth it?

After blowing out the candles, Sam refused to let us cut the cake.  We finally convinced him that we would remove the bugs and just eat the grassy cake part and he agreed.
Afterwards, we went outside and enjoyed some quality time on the new swingset.  Happy Birthday, Sam.  We love you and your love for planes and bugs!

Looks like a fantastic birthday, Sam. I think my favorite part was the bug cake, too. Oh, the things mothers will do to see a smile on their child's face-haha! I'm also glad to see the new swing set is a hit.

P.S. My cousin's husband is the director of the Hill Air Force Museum. Let me know next time you go, and maybe he could give you a guided tour. He is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to military planes.
